Week three of Women’s Professional Soccer is in the books with two matches played over the weekend of April 23-24. The Boston Breakers traveled to Florida to take on magicJack which won 1-0 on Saturday. The WNY Flash traveled down to Atlanta to take on the Beat where they played to a 2-2 draw.
For magicJack, this was their first game ever after the game the week before in Philadelphia was postponed. For the most part, nobody knew much about the team, so it was anybody’s guess as to what the outcome of the game would be, and what the crowd would look like. We soon found out that 1,224 fans saw magicJack win against the Breakers. Abby Wambach crossed the ball into the box where Ella Masar beat Breakers goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher to score in the 26th minute.
The WNY Flash was hoping to go 2-0 against a young Atlanta Beat team, but instead dropped its lead twice and ended with a surprising result of 2-2. The first goal of the match was scored by Christine Sinclair in the 3rd minute. Her shot from inside the box beat Ali Lipsher to the left side of the goal. In the 58th minute Lori Chalupny found the space from outside the top right corner of the box to fire a shot past Ashlyn Harris and tie the game. The Flash took the lead again in the 67th minute when Sinclair crossed the ball into the box where Marta, a halftime substitute, headed the ball into the goal. Carli Lloyd then scored the equalizer in the 70th minute on a strike that was bending out and away from Harris who did everything she could to save it.
Despite the draw, the Flash is still in first place, tied with Atlanta who has played one more game than them with 4 points. magicJack and Boston are tied 2nd place with 3 points each, and Philly and Sky Blue are tied for 3rd place with one point each.
Next week, all games are on Sunday, May 1st.
