WPS Week 11

soccer_ballWeek 11 of Women’s Professional Soccer started on Wednesday as the Philadelphia Independence traveled down to Atlanta to take on the Beat. The Boston Breakers hosted the Chicago Red Stars on Friday, the Independence played their 3rd game in eight days as they faced the Washington Freedom on Saturday, and FC Gold Pride got their first loss at home against Sky Blue FC on Sunday.

The Atlanta Beat were coming off their first win, and scored first against Philly. It started with a free kick taken by Tina Ellertson which found McCall Zerboni who played the ball into the penalty area for Yamaguchi to sneak into the goal in the 14th minute. Danesha Adams then found Amy Rodriguez in front of Hope Solo in the 35th minute to tie it all up. That was Rodriguez’s 4th goal of the season. Three minutes into the second half, a Joanna Lohman cross was headed into the Beat’s goal by Beat defender Stacy Bishop, and gave Philly the lead. Tina Ellertson scored her 2nd goal of the season heading the ball in at stoppage time to save the Beat and give them a point.

The Boston Breakers suffered their first loss at home and 5th loss of the season against Ella Masar the Chicago Red Stars. Kate Markgraf started the attack that led to the first goal in the 13th minute with a long ball, flicked further up the field by Cristiane which Ella Masar got to and chipped the ball over Breakers goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher. The Breakers came back strong in the second half as they scored in the first minute of it when Laura Del Rio ran down a ball in the left wing and crossed it for Fabiana to score her first goal this season. Ella Masar, however, scored the game-winner for Chicago in the 79h minute to take 3 points from Boston. As Maeher was coming out of her box the kick a lofted ball off the field, Masar got to it first and tapped it towards the goal. No Breakers defenders were able to get to the ball before it crossed the goal line, and the final score was 2-1 to Chicago.

It seems like the Philadelphia Independence and the Washington Freedom always play the most entertaining games, and Saturday was no different. After going down 2-0 to the Freedom, Philadelphia came back to win it 3-2. Lene Mykjaland scored the first goal in the first minute of the match after Karina LeBlanc saved Abby Wambach’s shot but left a rebound, which Mykjaland capitalized on. Eleven minutes later, Wambach was tripped up in the box by Allison Falk and the Freedom were awarded a penalty kick. Wambach herself took it, and doubled the lead to 2-0. The score stayed through the first half, but a second half comeback gave the Independence their win. Amy Rodriguez scored her first goal of the night in the 62nd minute after slotting a Tina DiMartino pass past Erin McLeod. Ten minutes later, Rodriguez scored her second goal after Jen Buczkowski served a long ball to the edge of the box. Rodriguez one-touched it away from Freedom defenders and shot the ball past McLeod once again. Lianne Sanderson shot the ball into the back of the net in stoppage time to give Philly the win.

FC Gold Pride played their second home game at their new stadium, and received their first loss at home from Sky Blue FC.  Heather O’Reilly ran down the right wing as usual and crossed the ball to the far post where Rosana dove to head the ball to the roof of the net right before she was subbed out for Tasha Kai in the 58th minute. It was Kai who then scored the second goal for Sky Blue shooting a slow-roller into the goal. FC Gold Pride had numerous quality chances, but were saved by Karen Bardsley, denied by the crossbar, or just shot wide.
