Dressed in a pair of stripy monochrome leggings, a yellow cycling t-shirt and a chequered cap, Betsey Johnson introduced Le Tour de Betsey at New York Fashion Week. Never one to be subtle, the collection has been described as athletic punk roadkill.
Johnson’s bawdy bike tour of New York City was dressed in spraycan neon ruffles, sailor suits and flower bloomers. She took her pink kid’s bike for a spin down the runway in a “Ride Me” jacket and in signature style, cartwheeled down the catwalk in a jubilant finale to a colourful, optimistic and vivacious show.
Taking a bike ride through New York as her inspiration, the vivacious designer created a series of mini-collections for her Spring/Summer 2011 show. The clothes reflected the grunge scene at the Brooklyn Bridge, all things nautical at South Street Seaport, pretty chiffon and seersucker for picnics in Central Park, structure sophistication for the Met and Lincoln Center — and puffy prom dresses inspired by New Year’s Eve at Times Square. All proved that fashion is nothing if it’s not about having fun.
Le Tour Betsey kicked off with a biker in a tiny blue bottom and matching jacket and another in green-striped leggings. One attempted a skateboard ride in platforms down the catwalk and another wore American-flag stiletto booties. The models even sported band-aids on their faces from falling off their bikes and boards. Bike chains and padlocks draped over the shoulder, bicycle wheels and other cycling accessories were on display throughout the show.
Kelly Osbourne, Carmen Electra, Denise Richards and Ciara were all front row for the event.
