Sharapova Haircut Sparks Online Frenzy

Did she or didn’t she?

When Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova posted pictures of her new do on her official Facebook page, fans went crazy.

The three-time Grand Slam winner is still a blonde, but it appears most of her long hair is replaced by a short bob. Sharapova has mostly kept to the same hairstyle – a long ponytail, since making her WTA debut as a teenager in 2002.

“So what do you guys think?? I kind of love it!” she wrote on Facebook. The photo got more than 140,000 likes as well as 2500 shares as of today. Most of the more than 10,000 comments were complimentary but more than a few fans were in shock.  Sharapova, who is engaged to Slovenian basketball player Sasha Vujacic, even received some matrimonial offers in response to the new pic.

But it turns out her cropped ‘do was actually a wig. Late Tuesday the tennis pro shared another photo with her signature long blonde hair, and the following explanation:

“My hair is still long … and blonde … and well it’s pretty much the same,” she wrote. “We did a shoot a few days ago and I sported all types of hairstyles … long and yes short (a wig!). When I posted those photos with the short hair I had no idea everyone would go all bananza … (my dear friends, I never actually said I cut my hair!).”

Bummer since we sort of liked the short and sassy look. What do you think?

I love this wig on her.  That haircut would look beautiful on her.  Too bad; she needs a change.
