Once the U.S. Open has come and gone, the average tennis fan turns attention toward the Australian Open. There’s great tennis going on at smaller events between now and December, but Grand Slams draw the most attention, and that’s why we’re already excited for Melbourne!

In looking toward the women’s tournament at the Australian Open, instead of merely predicting winners, we’re going to take an approach that considers the betting odds involved. As the event creeps closer, we will of course see an official tournament draw, as well as odds on individual matches – but for now, Betfair’s backing odds for each player serve as great fuel for speculation and prediction. • Serena Williams – It goes without saying that Serena will be the favorite. She just won the U.S. Open with relative ease, and few can hang with her, let alone beat her.

• Victoria Azarenka – That said, Vicka Azarenka is perhaps the only woman on tour who can consistently challenge Serena Williams. Azarenka is the defending champion in Melbourne.

• Maria Sharapova – Sharapova had a turbulent August – firing coach Jimmy Connors after a single loss, contemplating a name change to “Sugarpova” to market a candy brand, and then pulling out of the Open with an injury – but if she’s healthy, she’ll be in the mix.

• Petra Kvitova – Kvitova probably doesn’t earn enough respect, but she’s been near the top of the women’s game for some time now, and shouldn’t be taken lightly.

• Na Li – Na Li has become a consistent threat in major events, and is always capable of making a semifinal run. She was a finalist in Australia in 2013.

• Agnieszka Radwanska – Radwanska can look fairly pedestrian at her worst, but at her best she’s incredibly capable. It seems like a matter of time before she breaks through with a big time result.

• Sloane Stephens – Stephens is pounding on the door of a Grand Slam championship. She’s still young, and still has her bad days, but her best result to date was a semifinal run at the Aussie, and she’s got a great opportunity to reach the next level.

• Simona Halep – Halep is a bit of a wildcard in this group, but she has the game to reach the quarters or semis.

• Angelique Kerber – Consistency is a problem, but Kerber can play very well in stretches, and should never be taken lightly.

• Samantha Stosur – The native Australian is a threat at any major, and in Australia, naturally, she’ll have extra motivation. She’ll also be looking to make up for a disappointing showing in the US Open.
