USWNT Coach Pia Sundhage has said she wants to coach the Swedish national team when her contract with the U.S. expires in 2012. It would be a big loss for the U.S., but understandable as Sweden is Sundhage’s home.
Sundhage told Swedish news agency TT on Sunday she would gladly say “yes, thank you!” if she was asked to start coaching Sweden’s women’s team.
Sundhage has helped the U.S. women win gold in the Olympics in 2008, and silver in this year’s World Cup. Next year, the U.S. will try to defend the Olympic gold in London, before her contract expires.
The U.S. team played to a 1-1 draw against Sweden on Saturday night before a record crowd in Glendale, Arizona. The international friendly was the last game for the WNT in 2011. They’ll return to the field in January for Olympic Qualifying in Vancouver, B.C.
