The My Fitness Pal “Calorie Counter and Diet Tracker” app is an easy and efficient way to keep ambitious New Year’s resolutions in check.

I downloaded My Fitness Pal on my iPhone right before the New Year so I could get a headstart tackling my health and fitness goals. I consider myself to be moderately active and while I’m not avidly trying to lose weight, I have resolved to be more conscious of my eating habits and pay more attention to the nutrients that go into my body.
My Fitness Pal requires users to sign up via Facebook or email. I opted to use my email, as I would rather keep my health goals separate from my social network. Next, the app asks questions about current weight, goal weight, gender, height, birth date, daily activity, weight loss goal (I entered lose one pound per week but options vary), country, and time zone. I love how personalized the diet profile is based on the above data. Users also have the option to sign up for an email service to receive tips, features, news, and updates regarding their fitness and health goals.
The program is incredibly intuitive. My favorite feature is the My Fitness Pal integration with my phone’s camera as a barcode scanner which makes calorie-counting incredibly easy. Even if I’m not planning to eat right away, I like to be able to scan products – snacks, beverages, etc. – to get a sense of the caloric impact. Of course you can’t find an item through the barcode scanner, you can select from the app’s extensive food/beverage database.
With over 2 million food options in its database, My Fitness Pal makes it SO easy to add food items to your log and track calories. The problem I have with other calorie counting programs is that I don’t feel they correctly track what I’m eating – often disregarding portion size and brand. However, this isn’t the case with My Fitness Pal. The other day I typed in “Peanut Butter & Jelly” and options ranged from “Salted Crunchy Peanut Butter”, ” Smooth Peanut Butter”, PB & J on toast, etc. Because the My Fitness Pal options are so specific, I can trust the accuracy of the calories in my log.
If you stick to the caloric guidelines, there is no reason why you can’t lose weight with this program! Track your calories, both consumed and burned, and you get a fairly accurate overview of After using My Fitness Pal for a few weeks, I really can’t imagine calorie counting any other way.
It’s important to keep diet and healthy resolutions in check. My Fitness Pal makes it easy by providing a food diary on the go, searchable food database, and discussion forums that offer support and motivation from others with similar health goals.
